The Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class hasn't changed a whole lot since the major makeover seen in the 2012 model and that's ok, because this is a very handsome and well-rounded luxury four-door coupe. It would have to be, given its competition in the likes of the gorgeous Audi A7 and confidently stylish BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe.
The Mercedes CLS Coupe's silhouette is unmistakable in its long, arching curve from nose to tail and a rear end and new-design front end bearing the Mercedes Star enhance the vehicle's elegant Car Diagnostic Tool, athletically powerful profile. As some would say, the CLS Coupe quite fittingly combines the best of sleek coupe style with full size sedan presence, being as it is the car that started it all - ‘it' being the four-door coupe segment.
The CLS Coupe comes to Hong Kong in the CLS 350, CLS 500 and CLS 63 AMG models. The CLS 500 is particularly sporty with standard front and rear aprons in AMG bodystyling, a radiator grille with single louvre painted in chrome or silver and brushed stainless steel sports pedals with rubber studs. The CLS 63 AMG highlights the masculine lines of the CLS 350 and CLS 500 exterior, with more aggressive aerodynamic elements marking it out as the brawny member of thie CLS lineup.
Designed to make the CLS Coupe as unmistakable at night as during the day, are LED indicator strips in the bi-xenon headlamps which form a ‘C' shape. The rear end also has night-design LED tail lights.
Within the Mercedes four-door coupe Autel Maxidas DS808, the dramatic styling continues with ‘silver chrome' surfaces, leather upholstery and trim elements in wood or black piano lacquer that add a hand-finished character to the cabin's luxurious atmosphere.
Audi's A7 and BMW's 6 Series also boast top notch luxury interiors. Up front, spaciousness is offered by all the competing makes. It's in the rear that the four-door coupe profile compromises passenger room, which becomes a bit cramped. Of the lot, the BMW probably trumps its rivals in offering the best in rear seat space.
As to be expected, the CLS Coupe employs a bevy of standard and optional safety equipment and driver assistance aids. All models get 10 airbags, ATTENTION ASSIST driver alertness monitoring, LED lights, PRE-SAFE occupant protection system, seat-belt tensioner, active head restraints, anti-lock brakes, stability and traction control, Night View Assist Plus, reversing camera, Active Parking Assist and more.
The A7's standard and optional safety lineup includes airbags and stability control, standard Bluetooth and rearview camera, adaptive cruise control, active lane assist, collision warning and night-vision display. This year, Audi's blind-spot monitor system is available on the base model and standard on every A7 at Prestige level and above.
The BMW's standard and optional safety lineup includes advanced dynamic stability control and traction control, anti-lock brakes, cornering and dynamic brake control, rear, top and side view cameras, integral active steering, adaptive LED headlights and night-view cameras with pedestrian detection.
On the road, Mercedes' CLS 350 is powered by a 6-cylinder engine and the CLS 500 and CLS 63 AMG by an 8-cylinder and the driving experience is one of relaxed, comfortable cruising - with extra agility and horsepower in the AMG model.
Audis' A7 offers a powerful and engaging drive and is able to build speed with impressive confidence. Exceptionally quick, BMW's 6 Series Gran Coupe devours long stretches of highway and can take on mountain roads easily enough.
